Brewster, New York, named for landowners James and Walter Brewster, is a village within the town Southeast, NY. The Brewsters’ allowed New York & Harlem Railroad to build a depot on their property. Despite being a villiage within a town, Brewster has its own government, courts, and highway department. Commonly, Brewster has been used to describe the entire town, although this is incorrect. The Post Office used “Brewster” for many years to describe the town but today, does not have a name on the building and uses “Brewster” as its postmark.
Brewster uniquely has the highest concentration of Guatemalan-American residents in the US with 38.16% of the population claiming Guatemalan ancestry. 55.98% of the population claim to be Hispanic or Latino. The current population is a little over 2,000 people.
