The name changed to Brookfield upon its incorporation in 1778 named for its first minister Reverend Thomas Brooks. Brookfield though much of its history was a small town with small businesses. In the 1970s, Brookfield was home to the headquarters for LEGO USA. The town has grown in the latter half of the 20th century and is now a popular summer home destination due to its location on Candlewood Lake. Today, the town is home to 16,000 residents.
